Caste census issue:

After 1872, questions related to religion and caste were asked in every census but after independence caste questions were stopped in the census. This is because after independence, the government believed that India has become a modern democracy and it is not appropriate to count people on the basis of primitive identity like caste. The government also believed that caste and casteism would end if caste was not counted.

Questions related to caste were asked in the year 1941, but due to the Second World War, the figures could not be compiled.
After independence, caste was not counted from 1951 to 2011. Despite not having caste-based census before 2011 census, each census included some questions related to caste, such as information about the population of people belonging to scheduled castes.
The constitution provides for political reservation to the scheduled castes in proportion to the population, so it is a constitutional need to know their population.
On the question of how much reservation to be given to Other Backward Caste- OBC, it was also recommended to collect data through census.
In the absence of reliable caste-based census data in the country, the Mandal Commission (1979) forced to work with the census data of the year 1931 and suggested to collect caste statistics during the census in the country.
The Mandal Commission report came into force in the year 1991 but caste data was not included in the 2001 census as per the recommendations of the commission.

15th Census (2011):

New dimensions are added to the census keeping in view the social, economic and other current perspectives. The caste census was conducted for the first time in 2011 after attaining independence.

The work of the 15th census began on 1 May 2010, 27 lakh officers were appointed and trained to complete this census in two phases.
These officers completed house-to-house census work in 7000 cities, towns and more than 6 lakh villages.
The 2011 census had three parts, such as house listing, national population and family units.
The final figures of the fifteenth census were released on April 30, 2013.
Between 2001 and 2011, India's population recorded an increase of 17.65%, it is known that the largest increase in India's population was 24.8% between 1961 and 1971.
According to the 2011 census data, the total population of India was 1,210,854,977.
According to the last census, Uttar Pradesh was the largest populous state, while Sikkim was recorded as the least populous state.
